The Antwerp University Hospital (UZA) is the leading teaching and tertiary referral hospital of the Antwerp region and is the academic medical Centre of the University of Antwerp.

The Clinical Department and Laboratory of Endocrinology, Diabetology, and Metabolic Diseases directed by Luc VAN GAAL, has built up a large expertise in studying alteration of endocrine and metabolic function and the pathophysiology and treatment of obesity and diabetes. The large population of obese and (pre)diabetic patients treated in this out- and in-patient clinical department, with a large tradition in clinical research, allows the direct access to the clinical part of this proposed study protocol.

Expertise:

different aspects of endo-metabolic modulation and obesity: studies on energy metabolism, including thermogenesis studies, exploring genetic predisposition (leptin and adiponectin polymorphisms, TPO and GPR120 mutants), new therapeutic options for obesity, co-morbidity, risk factor analysis, serum levels of hormones, (including leptin), indirect calorimetry to measure resting energy expenditure, measurement of oxidative stress, NAFLD and endocrine disrupters.

Facilities:

Out- and in-patient clinical department, with direct access to overweight and obese patients. Facilities to realize a follow-up of these patients during dietary weight reduction intervention .
